The number of South Dakotans who would be available to staff a new or expanding business, or South Dakota’s labor supply, was estimated at 47,025 in March 2016. Included in this labor supply are those who currently hold jobs (and would like to change) and those who, for a variety of reasons, do not have jobs. Preliminary estimates show the March 2016 South Dakota labor force unchanged over the month, with the level of employed increasing to 442,900. The level of unemployed decreased by 700 (5.7 percent). Based on a monthly survey of South Dakota establishments where employment data is collected for the pay periods that occur during the 12th of the month, preliminary estimates show the total nonfarm wage and salaried worker level increased by 2,200 (or 0.5 percent) from February 2016 to March 2016.
