emotional intelligence - EQ

Kelly Love Johnson / January 26, 2018

Why EQ is as Important as IQ in Your Job Search

So what is EQ and why should you care? We'll let the person who coined the term explain.

We've written about EQ before—"The Weird Reason Why Employers Aren't Calling You Back"—and heard from so many readers that we wanted to share the origin of the concept of emotional intelligence.

You're probably familiar with IQ (intelligence quotient) tests, but EQ, or emotional intelligence, has risen to the top of "must-have" lists for hiring managers and recruiters for the past 10 years now. Daniel Goleman's 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence,  was named one of the 25 “Most Influential Business Management Books” by TIME Magazine and he wrote two more books on EQ: Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence offers an up-to-date summary of his thinking on leadership and The Brain and Emotional Intelligence: New Insights gathers recent findings from brain research on topics ranging from creativity and optimal performance, the brain-to-brain connection in leadership, and to how to enhance emotional intelligence itself.
